Come chat to us about your public engagement work

Do you have an idea for how to involve and/or engage people with your work and fancy discussing it with someone? The team at the Public Engagement Unit can help. Find out more about our Help and Advice Surgeries, which we're launching in 2025.

Help, advice and guidance

Whether you're new to public involvement and engagement with research or have lots of experience, we know sometimes it's good to chat with someone to troubleshoot an issue or bounce ideas around.

Since we were established back in 2012, we've had many, many, many chats with colleagues from right across the University of Bath and is a key part of how we've been supporting researchers, technicians and other staff to engage people with their research.

We bring a wealth of practice-based experience and thinking around public engagement and are available to discuss anything related to public involvement and/or engagement with research.

So, if you're tackling an issue or simply want to find out more about some public involvement and/or engagement with research opportunities, we can help.

Help and Advice Surgeries

In January 2025 we're launching our Help and Advice Surgeries. These are 30 minute one-to-one or one-to-few meeting either online or in-person with a member of the Public Engagement Unit which anyone at the University of Bath can book to discuss anything related to public involvement and/or engagement with research.

What can you discuss during an advice surgery?

No topic is off limits, well, as long it's about public involvement and/or engagement. This could be topics such as:

  • helping you think about your potential public involvement and/or engagement ideas
  • opportunities where you can source funding to undertake public involvement and/or engagement with your research
  • how to organise an activity
  • training and professional development in public involvement and/or engagement
  • troubleshoot issues you might be encountering in your involvement and/or engagement work
  • evaluating your involvement and/or engagement work
  • signposting to public groups and /or organisations, or teams at the University of Bath who you might want to work with or opportunities you might want to take part in

and much more!

How it works

Each surgery lasts up to 30 minutes and can be either online or in-person (with at least a week's notice for in-person). Booking a session is straightforward. All you have to do is check out our latest dates on our Help and Advice Surgeries booking page and book your slot.

If you can't make any of these dates, not to fear, you can always drop us a line (public-engagement@bath.ac.uk) and we arrange a chat at a better time.

Dean Veall is Deputy Head of Public Engagement at the University of Bath.
