FUTURES kicks off in Bath and Bristol
FUTURES, A Festival of Discovery, gets underway with two live events in Bath and Bristol.
Join us this Friday for Up Late at the Museum: The Future of Work, a free after-hours event at the Museum of Bath at Work. Explore the museum at night and discover how technology, culture, and changing attitudes are reshaping our working lives.
This family-friendly event offers a rare chance to explore the museum at night and glean an insight into how our working lives are being transformed by technology, culture, and changing attitudes.
Up Late at the Museum is held at the Museum of Bath at Work, Julian Road, Bath, BA1 2RH on Friday 26 September from 17:00 to 21:00. Reserve your free spot through this link.
On Saturday, FUTURES Discovery Day comes to Bristol’s We The Curious, giving families a chance to experience cutting-edge research through hands-on activities, from quantum science and dark matter to animal emotions and climate change.
Discovery Day takes place at We The Curious, One Millennium Square, Anchor Road, Bristol, BS1 5DB from 10:00 to 16:00. Registration is not required but you can reserve a spot here.
Ask a researcher: FUTURES AMAs
FUTURES is also hosting a series of Reddit Ask Me Anythings, featuring researchers from the Universities of Bath, Bristol, and Bath Spa from 22 September to 9 October.
Topics range from revolutionary skin cancer treatment to data privacy in the face of quantum computing, the use of drones in the world’s most hazardous environments – and even how to build a career in academia.

Tell us about your public engagement
The HE-BCI survey is currently looking for respondents – if you organised or participated in a public event between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026, your data helps the University demonstrate the scale and range of public engagement work and supports continued funding for activities like these.

Free virtual tickets to Communicate
The PEU has a limited number of free virtual tickets to Communicate, the National History Consortium’s leading conference for nature and environmental communications professionals.
This year’s theme is Breaking Barriers, exploring the political, cultural, and ideological obstacles that have influenced our attempts to address unprecedented environmental challenges.

Science filmmaking workshop
Former BBC filmmaker George Chan’s Bluefire Films returns with its popular three-day workshop on Science Filmmaking, held on 16-18 November at Folly Farm, just outside Bristol.
The course covers all aspects of professional filmmaking including script writing, shooting sequences, recording strong audio, editing, and understanding cameras.
Previous participants have included filmmakers from NPR and the Wellcome Trust, and you can find more details on the Bluefire Films website.
