12 July marks Simplicity Day – a national day in America which celebrates philosopher Henry David Thoreau, who was born in 1817.
Thoreau was a lifelong advocate for simplicity and living self-sufficiently. He is best known for his book ‘Walden’ – an autobiographical account of his experience of living simply and “deliberately” in a cabin in the woods in Concord, Massachusetts.
Simplicity Day is a reminder to strip away life’s clutter, embrace mindfulness and celebrate the simple things in life. It invites us to slow down, let go of excess, switch off from technology and unnecessary stresses, and rediscover joy in life’s most basic and meaningful moments.
Although we don’t officially celebrate it here in the UK, it’s worth reflecting on some of the lessons Thoreau imparted in his works – particularly in our current times of information overload and ‘always on’ culture.
“Simplify your life. Don't waste the years struggling for things that are unimportant. Don't burden yourself with possessions. Keep your needs and wants simple and enjoy what you have. Don't destroy your peace of mind by looking back, worrying about the past. Live in the present. Simplify!”
Here are some things you can do to simplify your life this weekend:
Unplug from technology
Taking breaks from screens can reduce mental stimulation and promote relaxation (particularly when you avoid social media and news updates). Consider putting away your devices to connect back in with yourself and those around you. You could designate phone-free times and locations, turn off your notifications, set time limits or dim your phone's display.
Spend time outside
Being outside in nature can be a great way of boosting your mood and overall wellbeing. Seek out some green spaces this weekend and pay attention to the sights and sounds around you.
Sign up to join our wellbeing walk on 23 July.
Practice mindfulness
Pay attention to the present moment, focusing on sensations, thoughts and emotions.
Download the Health Assured Wisdom app for a range of meditation and breathing exercises.
Declutter your home
Use it as time to clear out your cupboards, donate any unwanted items and reorganise your home to create space and calm.
Read and reflect
You could explore the writings of Henry David Thoreau, particularly Walden. His reflections on simple living might inspire you to make meaningful changes in your own life. The Library has several copies of Walden available to borrow.
