WIRC@Bath attends 17th edition of IWA-UK Young Water Professionals Conference

A delegation from Bath attended the 17th edition of the UK Young Water Professionals Conference in Norwich – organised jointly by the International Water Association (IWA), Anglian Water and the University of East Anglia. The conference, held from the 30th of March to the 1st of April 2016, included a varied programme around the topics of People, Planet and Profit and gathered more than 100 delegates from a diverse background of water industries and universities. The core of the conference was to provide young water professionals with an opportunity to develop their career by building their network and by understanding the opportunities within the water sector. Among the many well organised sessions, there was the opportunity to benefit from professional development advice from senior professionals, interesting keynote presentations on the three main topics as well as extremely engaging presentations from many postgraduate students and young professionals either in the panel sessions and the highly interactive poster sessions.

Chrysoula Papacharalampou was invited to present her work in the panel session on “Planet” on the topic of an integrated asset management methodology that she has been developing together with Wessex Water. Jon Chouler, Ellaine Gallagher and Fernanda Souza presented their work on “Microbial Fuel Cells”, “Behavioural studies for water use patterns” and “Treatment of a hospital wastewater by advanced oxidation processes” respectively at the poster sessions.

The conference came to an end but not before a terrific dinner, organised at the Saint Andrews Halls for Water Aid and where Jon Chouler took home the prize for best poster presentation!

It was also a fantastic opportunity to become more connected with the IWA activities in the UK, having in mind that with the establishment of WIRC as a dynamic research centre it is important to connect our growing community of staff and postgraduate students with the international community of water professionals.

WIRC @ Bath celebrates its first anniversary

To celebrate the first anniversary of the Water Innovation and Research Centre (WIRC) @ Bath water researchers at the University were invited to join a get-together event. The event intended to bring together water researchers across all departments and different areas of research to spark new collaborations and ideas, and just to meet each other.

The event was a large success and it was impressive to see the variety of water-related research that is conducted at the University. Held in the 4 West foyer on Thursday 21st January 2016, a diverse group of about 50 participants joined, including a delegation from Wessex Water. Many researchers used the opportunity to show posters outlining latest results or ideas for future research. After the introduction speech by the Director of WIRC, Professor Jan Hofman, intensive scientific discussions took place.

14th World Congress on Anaerobic Digestion

Gergely Forgacs (WIRC @ Bath) and Ian Law (Wesesx Water) recently attended the 14th World Congress on Anaerobic Digestion which was held in Viña del Mar, Chile on 15-18 November 2015, and organised by the International Water Association. The conference is the leading international event and it covered a wide range of topics related to the application of anaerobic digestion processes, including:

  1. Reuse of effluent and digestate
  2. Biogas upgrading and management
  3. Microbiology of anaerobic digestion
  4. Resource recovery
  5. New products, novel process configuration and emerging technologies
  6. Modelling, instrumentation and control
  7. Environmental management (life cycle assessment, clean development mechanisms)

Impact Award for collaboration between Wessex Water and University of Bath

On 29th September 2015 at the University's annual Impact Celebration Dinner the collaboration between Wessex Water and the University of Bath received the 'Aspiring Business Impact' award in recognition of their successful partnership in recent years. The event acknowledged the collaborative work supported by the University's EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA), which promotes innovation and knowledge exchange.

Thinking Catchments: moving beyond physical asset management

Research by Chrysoula Papacharalampou, a PhD Research Student in the Sustainable Energy Research Team in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is featured in both Water Active and the Institute of Water Journal this month. Her research currently being undertaken in collaboration with Wessex Water indicates that the water sector needs to consider the benefits provided by the natural environment in their strategic decision making. The work proposes catchment-based asset management and demonstrates how water industries can include natural assets (e.g. land, soil, ecosystems) in their portfolio.

Water Active is the UK's leading water industry monthly magazine and has the highest number of readers in the water industry. This article continues the monthly series of features by researchers in the Water Innovation and Research Centre at the University of Bath (WIRC @ Bath).

The Institute of Water Journal is published quarterly and contains articles of interest and relevance to the industry, directly targeted at those within the industry. This gives its members unparalleled opportunities to increase their knowledge about topics that are crucial to a successful future.

Abstract: Water is a key element for prosperity, well-being and human health. Water is essential for life. In 2015 about 91 % of the global population is using an improved drinking water source, and 58 % use piped water supply services – this represents a significant outcome for the Millennium Development Goals. Sanitation remains a more pressing issue as around the world 946 million people still go to the toilet outside, and 2.4 billion people still lack improved sanitation. Open defecation is a practice which can lead to the contamination of drinking water sources, and the spread of diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, hepatitis A and typhoid. In addition, demographic change, human activity, and climate change all increase the stress on water resources and water quality. Water scarcity is affecting more 40 % of the population and this amount is increasing. Water stress is present on all continents, and it hinders the availability of natural resources and economic and social development. Water is increasingly thought of as a significant risk to business sustainability. In January 2015, the World Economic Forum identified water crises as having the highest global risk impact, even compared to interstate conflict and the spread of infectious diseases. The likelihood of global risk driven by water crises ranked highly, alongside interstate conflict, extreme weather events and natural catastrophes, and failure of climate change action, or national governance.

Anaerobic Digestion overview in Water Active

Dr Tom Arnot, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Engineering, and Ian Law, Technical Manager at GENeco, Wessex Water, give an overview of the collaborative work being done in the area of advanced anaerobic digestion in the latest issue of Water Active. This project is part of a three year collaboration with Wessex Water jointly funded by the company and the EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account.

Wessex Water to invest in University research

We’re thrilled to announce a new partnership between our water researchers here at Bath and Wessex Water.

Elliott-Arnot2The partnership will allow five streams of research into areas such as sustainable water and sewage treatment, keeping bills affordable and reducing carbon footprint - all of which will be explored by a multi-disciplinary research team from fields as diverse as the sciences, engineering and management here at Bath.

The collaboration will also allow us to launch a new state of the art ‘Water Innovation and Research Centre @ Bath’ in 2015, a facility that will provide a unique environment in which research into water technologies and resource management can be conducted.
