Research projects being conducted across the University all include an element of compute, from recording statistical samples in a spreadsheet through to solving large, complex computational models with a High-Performance Computing (HPC) system. Advancing Research Computing (ARC) is building upon the University's High Performance Computing (HPC) service and bringing this together with expertise in Research Software Engineering (RSE) to help streamline the interactions between our researchers and the use of IT.

The ARC centre of excellence provides an innovative and engaging community-orientated, computational environment to help nurture research talent for all faculties and departments across the University. To assist our researchers throughout the research lifecycle, we focus on:

  • providing a range of support and consultancy services as well as providing training courses, working collaboratively, and promoting and sharing best practices with the research community
  • managing the University's central High Performance Computing (HPC) service and helping our researchers process and analyse very large data sets, and perform complex computational tasks
  • promoting and supporting the development of reproducible research and sustainable software practices through collaborations with Research Software Engineers
  • assisting in the development and costing of research projects
