Bath's Pump Room for local events

I recently visited the Roman Baths and Pump Room to explore their potential as an event space for University events, and it’s hard to imagine a more striking setting for bringing people together.

The Pump Room itself is a versatile and elegant venue. It can host a sit-down dinner for up to 200 guests or theatre-style talks for around 300, although events can only take place in the evenings once the space is closed to the public. The Pump Room side of the venue is largely accessible and includes accessible toilets, although there is no permanent hearing loop, so organisers should consider a temporary solution if needed. There is a raised stage, but no in-house projector or screen, meaning bookers will need to arrange audiovisual support. This is entirely feasible, with power outlets available at the front and centre of the room for screens and presentations, and the existing waiter desk can be repurposed as an AV desk.

At certain times of day, it is also possible to book the Roman Baths’ entry hall as a reception space. This works well for networking, with options for a paid or open bar and a cloakroom. Outside, a wide terrace overlooking the Baths offers multiple power outlets and would suit informal networking, a small exhibition, or simply providing guests with an unforgettable view of the historic site.

Additionally, on the opposite side of the Baths, accessed either through the complex or via Swallow Street, is the Clore Learning Centre. This newly designed facility includes a purpose-built open teaching space, an investigation zone, and tunnels that connect directly to the Roman Baths, making it particularly well-suited to learning-focused or participatory events. It is often used by schools during the day but is a good option outside of the school term time or school hours.

Finally, it is possible to hire the Roman Baths themselves for evening receptions. While fully open to the weather (and therefore better suited to warmer months), the space is undeniably impressive and ideal for hosting an international audience. Organisers should note the uneven flooring, challenging acoustics for speeches, and limited accessibility, and may wish to use the overlooking terrace for speeches due to better power access and audio options. The gas lanterns in the Baths can be lit for evening events adding to the atmosphere.

All catering at this venue is provided by Searcys as the officially contracted caterer for Bath and North East Somerset's historic venues.

Please note that full accessibility information for this venue is available here.
