The Milner Centre for Evolution Project update

Posted in: Milner Centre

Welcome to the fifth monthly update aimed at keeping you up to speed on the new Milner Centre for Evolution project. Site manager, Firhan Rudorf-Saeed, is on site throughout the working day, and should be the first point of contact for any issues. The team are currently holding weekly meetings with the users of Building 4SA, and attend the monthly University contractors meeting with a view to keeping staff and students informed of the works and to give notice of any potential disruption.

The first stage of the groundwork is now complete. The builders have excavated the ground to lower levels to install foundations and drainage up to 3m in depth. The second stage of the groundwork is scheduled for the week commencing Monday 26 June, where the works involving the external perimeter drainage will continue to completion. During this period there will be some element of noisy works due to the depth of the drainage. The noise & vibration will be intermittent throughout the working day, and will take us into the beginning of July.

Road conditions are constantly being monitored, and a road sweeper is being utilised as and when required. There is no further work planned in the immediate future which will affect the road outside the site compound.

Steel frame erection commenced during the first week of May, and has now been lined, levelled and signed over, ready for the next phase of the build. Both the first floor and roof are made of precast concrete planks – the works involved around installing these planks will see us through to the middle of June. These works will involve the use of a 130TN mobile crane to position each plank in its place with the emphasis on precision and quality.

As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding whilst the construction phase is ongoing.
