Now that the rebuild process in 8W is complete, we would like to invite everyone to come and visit the rooms to see the extent of the refurbishment, and look over the new technology.
The visits will be held on:
Friday 26 June
10:00 to 12:00
14:00 to 16:00
If you would like to come along and see the result of the first year of the refurbishment programme, please do!
8W project is drawing to a close... the final fixed seating is going in.... lecterns are being connected up..... final touches are well underway.
The official handover is tomorrow - 12 June 2015.
There's a small amount of finishing off to do, but on the whole the project is on time.
Here's a sneak preview of some of the new facilities:
One of the new lecterns in 8W (8w2.29)
8W1.1 - with new seating
The 8W refurbishment continues at some pace. We should be having Level 2 rooms handed back to us late on Friday evening.
There are some changes in the rooms:
All the rooms will be fully HD and Widescreen.
All the rooms will have new controllers, lecterns, visualisers, and screens.
There has also been an upgrade to all of the wiring infrastructure in the rooms - so we should be much better placed for future operations.
The fixed seating is returning to the lecture theatres today (new).
We've arranged a demo of an interactive screen:
It will be demonstrated on 8 JUNE 2015 in EB0.12 at 15:00 to 16:30 by Dimi from Interactive Education.
If you would like to come along and see the latest screens, please do.
Over the last weekend, Panopto, who provide the Re:View platform for us, have completed their update of their servers, and consequently the software version of the server.
We are now running version 4.9.
There are no items of great effect, but some functionality is extended:
- A new Mac Recorder version (will work with keynote)
- HTML5 based importing (can upload from more devices)
All of the reaft of changes are documented here:
8W continues in refurbishment. We thought it would be good to show some of the rooms being changed:

Panopto, who provide our lecture capture platform, have recently announced that they will be upgrading our Re:View platform on:
Saturday, May 30 - from 1:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m.
Panopto will upgrade our version from 4.8 to 4.9.
This means that our server will be offline for a small time. During this time, it will not be possible to access recordings on the server, and any attempts to upload from recorder clients will result in a "Server unable to connect" message. Recordings will still be made though, and will make it to upload later.
Full details of the upgrade are available directly from Panopto:
As ever, we will keep a close watch on this to make sure there is minimal disruption.
The summer refurbishment project being undertaken on 8W GTA rooms is well underway.
Most of the rooms have been stripped out, and are underway with first-fix for the AV equipment, and also with the decoration.
The refurbishment will replace many of the rooms very similarly to their previous layout. However, some of the rooms will be a little different to before. More to come later.
A preview of the work being undertaken at the moment is below:
8W1.1 - Strip Out
8W2.1 - Strip Out
More to come over the coming days!
We've noticed recently that there have been some profiles of several established companies published on Gizmodo.
The recent release of the Sony profile makes interesting reading, showing off several bits of technology that have become ubiquitous.
We have been offered a demonstration of a new interactive screen from Clevertouch.
The demonstration will go ahead in 3W4.1 on 12 May 2015 at 12:15pm.
Further details about the screen and its abilities are here:
Please come along if you would like to see these new screens in action.
