Polden project update

Welcome to the 3rd monthly update aimed at keeping you up to speed on the new Polden Student Accommodation project.

Our Project Manager Steve Phillips is on site throughout the working day, and should be the first point of contact for any issues. We are working closely with the university Estate and Accommodation staff and attend the monthly university contractors meeting with a view to keeping staff and students informed of our works and to give notice of any potential disruption.

We have used the first week of the university Easter break to install our site office and welfare set up within the West Car Park. Power, plumbing and IT are currently being installed to the office to allow our full site team to be based on the project within the next two weeks.

With regard to our site works, we are still in the process of excavating the ground to install foundations and drainage up to 4m in depth from existing ground levels. Unfortunately the removal of rock is still ongoing. The noise and vibration is intermittent throughout the working day and will take us into mid-June.

Foundations are being dug and filled with reinforced cages prior to pouring with concrete to the Eastern side of the site.  This involves several lorry loads of concrete to be delivered to the site on a daily basis.  Wall reinforcement can now be seen coming out of the ground which will form the reinforced walls and columns in the coming weeks. Road conditions are constantly being monitored, and a road sweeper is being utilised as and when required.

Drainage and gas pipes are currently being drilled beneath the West Car Park which will provide connections for the Polden development. We are using Horizontal Directional Drilling below ground to reduce the disruption to the users of the car park. A hole is required at the end of the drain and gas route within the car park to 10West to connect onto but we will continue to liaise with security to minimise the disruption to the car park users.

Live electric cables are in the process of being exposed to allow them to be moved into the road adjacent 7W and 9W in the next week.

Within the next month, we will be erecting a tower crane which will then assist with the construction of the concrete frame which is due to start early May 2017.

As always, we appreciate your patience and understanding whilst the construction phase is ongoing.

Polden: Section of Quarry Rd to close from Mon 6 Mar

📥  Polden

To facilitate the construction of the Polden accommodation building, changes are required to the roads on the west of the Claverton campus for the duration of the project.

Completion is scheduled for summer 2018; we apologise for any inconvenience.

Latest update:

From Monday 6 March, a section of Quarry Road will be closed for an extended period of time.

A new entrance to the West car park, which is currently under construction, will be in use.

If you want to access the eastern side of Campus, please use the main entrance on Convocation Avenue, off Claverton Down Road.

Although the Underdeck will be open in both directions, there are currently temporary road works taking place with traffic lights.

Please see plan below for the new routes for drivers (red) and pedestrians (green).

Delivery drivers have been advised to enter the Campus via Convocation Avenue; their route is signed.

Please take extra care in this area as there will be vehicles, pedestrians and construction traffic using the roads and car park.

  • The cycle shelter on Quarry Road has closed, with alternative spaces in shelters outside 10W and at the bottom of Wessex House steps.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

New Polden accommodation construction and access to Claverton campus

📥  Polden

Preparations for the new Polden accommodation are now underway.

As a result, there will be changes to access to the west of the Claverton campus for the duration of the project, due to complete next summer (2018).

From Thursday 16 February, the road running alongside 7W and 9W will be closed. This means parents and carers driving to Westwood nursery should use the Claverton Down Road entrance.

Work to create a new West Car Park entrance and exit in the top corner of the car park will start next week (w/c 20 February). Once complete (scheduled for Monday 27 February), the section of Quarry Road next to the new building will be closed and the Quarry Road campus entrance will only be for access to the West Car Park, except in an emergency.

Polden car park has closed and the temporary Overflow West Car Park has reopened to offer the same number of car parking spaces.

The cycle shelter on Quarry Road has closed, with alternative spaces in shelters outside 10W and at the bottom of Wessex House steps.

A new pedestrian route will be created across the top of the West Car Park onto campus before the closure of Quarry Road.

The underdeck will fully reopen to vehicles on Tuesday 28 February.

A number of the trees that have been removed will be replaced during final landscaping of the Polden project.
